Our commitment to sustainable seafood
Giant provides our customers with many choices of fresh and delicious seafood from wild caught fisheries and fish farms that are minimizing their environmental impacts. We also continue to look for new ways to promote ocean-friendly practices in our stores and with our suppliers. And we always put seafood safety first.
What is sustainable seafood?
We define sustainable seafood as being wild caught or farm-raised seafood that utilizes
practices to ensure the longevity of the fishery/aquaculture operation while working to
minimize environmental impacts and promote positive economic and social growth, all the
while knowing product safety remains key within all considerations.
How are we working towards sustainability?
Since 2000, we have partnered with the New England Aquarium to advance our commitment to
sustainable seafood. The New England Aquarium team evaluates the seafood we are
purchasing and provides recommendations for making better choices of wild-caught and
farm-raised seafood sources. We then take these recommendations and work with our
suppliers to take the appropriate steps to make their wild-caught or farmed seafood more
environmentally responsible. The long-term goal is to inspire all fisheries and farms to
improve their practices and thus improve the overall environmental responsibility of our
seafood supply chain.
The New England Aquarium has the appropriate staff and expertise to assist us in improving the environmental friendliness of the products we offer you. Their staff are knowledgeable in both wild-capture fisheries and farm-raised fish operations. They are also well respected throughout the conservation community and are engaged in many different collaborative projects with other non-profit, and seafood industry, organizations. Recently, the New England Aquarium partnered with more than a dozen conservation organizations from the United States and Canada to create the Common Vision for Environmentally Responsible Seafood. Giant was among a select list of companies to publicly support the Common Vision and are working on each of the steps with our partner, the New England Aquarium (for more information, see www.solutionsforseafood.org).
