Recent FDA Announcement Regarding Seafood Imports from China
June 29, 2007. The FDA issued a news release announcing that they have broadened their import control of all farm-raised seafood products from China, specifically Catfish, Basa, Eel, Shrimp and Dace. Their announcement is related to the presence of low levels of drug residues that are not approved for use in the US for the farming of aquatic animals.
  • The FDA is not seeking a recall of any products already in US commerce and is not advising consumers to destroy or return any imported farm raised seafood they may have already purchased. According to the FDA, customers can safely consume these products.
  • We carry a large variety of seafood, which we source from the United States and other countries, including China, so customers have alternative choices available. In addition, we have many seafood options from which customers may choose.
  • For customer convenience, our seafood is clearly marked with the country of origin on the product packaging or available at the seafood counter.
  • For further information, the FDA has a consumer line: 888-INFO-FDA (888-463-6332). You may also reach our Consumer Affairs Department at Giant: (888) 4-MY-GIANT.

New temperature guidelines announced for cooked poultry!
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has established a new minimum internal cooking temperature for poultry. When poultry is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F, pathogens such as Salmonella and viruses such as the avian influenza virus are destroyed according to new research. This new temperature is safe for both light and dark meat. Previously, USDA had recommended 170° for light meat and 180° for dark meat.

USDA Recommended Internal Temperatures
Beef, Lamb & Veal Steaks & Roasts medium rare 145 °F (160 °F - medium)
Ground Beef, Pork, Veal & Lamb, Pork Chops, Ribs & Roasts, Egg Dishes 160 °F
Chicken & Turkey, Stuffing & Casseroles, Leftovers 165 °F

Project CHILL!

Keep the temperature in your refrigerator at 40°F or below to slow bacteria growth in your food. Using a quality refrigerator thermometer to maintain and control this temperature is one of the most effective ways of reducing the risk of food borne illnesses.
