Product Recalls
Giant cares about your health!
A food recall is voluntary, initiated by a manufacturer or distributor to protect the public from products that may cause health problems or may be misbranded (incorrect labeling and/or packaging).
There are three types of recalls:
Class I - This is the most serious. Eating the food may cause health problems or even death.
Class II - This involves a potential health hazard where there is a remote probability of a health problem if the food is eaten.
Class III - This involves a situation where eating the product will not cause a health problem, but the product still is in violation of a Federal regulation.

Basic Food Flavors Inc. of Las Vegas, Nev. has recalled its flavor enhancer called hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) because the product may be contaminated with the bacterium Salmonella Tennessee. At this time, no illnesses associated with this contamination have been reported to the FDA.
Basic Food Flavors sold its HVP to other food manufacturers and distributors for use in producing other food products. Only HVP from Basic Food Flavors is associated with this recall.

What Do I Do If I Bought A Recalled Product?
If in searching the FDA's Web site, you find that you have bought a food that has been
recalled, check the Web site of the company that made the food to find out any
instructions on disposal or refunds.
Customers may return product to any Giant store for a full refund.
Customers with questions can call our Consumer Affairs toll-free line, 1-888-469-4426 M-F 9am -5 pm ET.
What is HVP?
Many companies use HVP as a flavor enhancer in commercially processed foods, such as
soups, hot dogs, chilis, stews, dips and salad dressings, gravies, and frozen dinners,
snack foods and will mix it with other seasonings for use in other products to make them
taste better. FDA is following up with Basic Food Flavors' customers to determine how the
recalled ingredient was used in products sold to consumers and if their manufacturing
processes were sufficient to kill Salmonella.
