GIANT FOOD RAISES $116K FOR SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE BY "PAINTING THE TOWN PINK"

July 2, 2009, Landover, MD - Giant Food, in partnership with their customers, has raised $116,408 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure by participating in the Washington Post's "Paint the Town Pink" supporting breast cancer outreach programs. On Wednesday, July 1, 2009, Robin Michel, executive vice president and general manager for Giant-Landover, presented the donation to Annetta Hewko, a breast cancer survivor and vice president of international programs for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

"Giant's generous customers have helped make this donation possible. Many have been touched in some way by breast cancer - through a colleague, a friend, or a family member - so Giant was very pleased to provide an easy and convenient opportunity for customers in our region to be supportive of this cause," said Robin Michel.

Giant stores across the area "went pink" on June 5, 2009. Employees dressed in pink and offered customers the opportunity to support the breast cancer movement by purchasing pink Giant brand gift cards and making $1, $5 or $10 donations at cash registers upon checkout. Customers also had the opportunity to add pink Giant brand reusable bags, cupcakes and floral arrangements to their shopping carts. Additionally, Giant pharmacies offered free breast self-exam information cards and brochures in support of this important cause.
