GIANT FOOD OFFERS EVEN GREATER SAVINGS IN CHALLENGING ECONOMIC TIMES

New Savings Initiative Arrives in Time to Relieve Back-to-School Budget Crunch

LANDOVER, Md. (August 27, 2009) – Building on a commitment to provide customers with the best possible value, Giant Food has announced a new initiative that will double the number of sale items each week to help stretch every budget. Since the 2006 launch of the Value Improvement Program (VIP), Giant has consistently introduced more ways to help shoppers lower their grocery bills. Giant’s new value initiative is designed to make it even easier for shoppers to access savings on thousands of additional items during these difficult economic times. The program launches as students head back to school, a time that is traditionally hard on families’ checkbooks.

“These new opportunities for savings are a continuation of our promise to simplify the shopping experience,” said Jeff Martin, executive vice president of merchandising and supply chain for Giant Food. “We’re proud to offer our customers even more value each time they shop with us through double the number of deals in our stores and low prices that make it easy to prepare healthy, affordable meals.”

Giant is introducing new shelf tags and in-store signage, along with a redesigned loyalty card. Customers can register their Giant card online and create their own personalized profile, view store services, and track savings and reward programs.

“We’re finding new ways to help our customers shop within their budget,” said Robin Michel, executive vice president and general manager for Giant Food. “In this economy, we understand that customers are looking for greater value when they shop. Building on the thousands of price reductions we’ve made aisle by aisle in recent years, we are doubling the number of savings opportunities. We want to give shoppers as many cost-conscious options as we can so they can buy more with less.”

In addition to saving money when they shop with their Giant card, customers can also earn funds for their local schools through Giant’s A+ Bonus Bucks every time they use their card. Since 1989, A+ Bonus Bucks has raised more than $79 million to help local schools purchase equipment and materials. During the 2008- 2009 school year alone, Giant customers helped raise close to $2 million for schools in Giant’s Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware trading area.

The new value initiative begins August 28, complementing the latest changes at Giant, which include a fresh look in many of its stores; the launch of corporate brand products such as Nature’s Promise; and the introduction of new in-store technology such as ORDER IT! deli kiosks and SCAN IT! hand-held scanners.
